89 VOICES

In October '89 thousands took to the streets in Leipzig to protest the East German regime. These ever growing "monday demonstrations" were strictly non-violent but nevertheless succeeded to set in motion a chain of events that led to the fall of the DDR dictatorship. Loomaland was commissioned by the city of Leipzig to create a light installation to celebrate and commemorate this historical moment.

Our installation 89 VOICES focuses on the role of women in the peaceful revolution of '89. We started by collecting the thoughts, hopes and dreams of women who were actively involved and then created an immersive labyrinth of 89 of their statements to be projected onto a central city square. But these voices from the past can only be uncovered through the participation of the audience. The projections will only appear around the visitors, thus making the audience an essential part of the installation. This links the artwork also symbolically with the revolution of '89: If nobody would have turned up, nothing would have happened. Interviews and content research was done in collaboration with our local partner Verein für Frauenkultur Leipzig.
